Sports Injury Ultrasound Examinations

The Toronto Centre for Medical Imaging (TCFMI), located in the heart of downtown Toronto is a state of the art medical imaging clinic providing the following diagnostic imaging services, including sports injury ultrasound. Click on the tabs below to learn more about our ultrasound services.

Ankle pain is very common in adults. Pain could be from acute injury (either leading to a fracture or ligament tear), masses (such as ganglion cysts), tendon or muscle tears from sports injuries, or chronic pain from arthritis. Tears of Achilles’ tendon are easily seen with ultrasound.
Elbow injuries are very common in all age groups. Injuries could either be traumatic or atraumatic. Pain from repetitive injuries affect the elbow in particular such as tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis) or golfer’s elbow (medial epicondylitis). Patients typically present with varying degrees of localized pain from mild to severe.
Hip pain is common in adults. Pain could be from repetitive injury (such as trochanteric bursitis on the outside of the hip), masses (such as enlarged lymph nodes usually from benign causes or hernia), tendon or muscle tears from sports injuries, or chronic pain from arthritis.
Knee pain is very common in adults. Pain could be from repetitive injury (such as arthritis or tendonitis), masses (such as Baker’s cyst in the back of the knee), tendon or muscle tears from sports injuries, ligament tears usually from severe fall such as from skiing, skating, soccer or chronic pain from arthritis.

Swelling of the knee from fluid accumulation could be from trauma, infection, arthritis, and meniscal tears. Meniscal tears are difficult to see with ultrasound (MRI is the preferred imaging test to find these tears).

Shoulder injuries are very common in all age groups. Injuries could either be traumatic or atraumatic. Tears of the rotator cuff and biceps tendons are a common cause of acute or chronic pain. Patients with tears of the rotator cuff tendon, typically present with varying degrees of pain from mild to severe (typically worse at night in bed), limited range of motion of the shoulder, and weakness.
Wrist pain is very common in all age groups. Pain could be from repetitive injury (such as De Quervain’s tenosynovitis seen more and more with increased use smart phones with keyboards such as the Blackberry), masses (such as ganglion cysts from minor or major trauma), tendon or ligament tears from more blunt or penetrating severe trauma, or chronic pain from arthritis.
